I'm looking for somebody to do some concept artwork

I’m looking for some a volunteer or volunteers to do some concept artwork for a game I have in mind.

ME: I’m a programmer by trade, and I am looking to create a game, with a game engine I purchased.

I may be able to provide a token payment or fee for the work (not a lot though).

Anyway, here’s the basic concept for the game, and I want some concept artwork to help get others interested in joining a programming + 3d modelers + animators team.

Type of Game : First Person 3D
Style of Game : Gothic Horror, similar in style to Resident Evil + Silent Hill (but in First Person view)

I would like to do it in first person view, because I want the “horror” to be “in your face” literally, where the monster(s) come right up to your face and you can see the beads of sweat and puss just oozing off them.

Overall design + atmosphere : Think any Hammer Horror film meets “The Exorcist” meets “The Legend of Hell House” meets HR Giger
(I’m really going for “The Legend of Hell House” in terms of atmosphere, but not many people are familiar with this movie)
(please don’t confuse horror with gore, the focus will be on horror, their will be gore, but again, I want to focus on horror)

Environment : Castles…Gothic…Baroque architecture. Dark and foreboding. (“between” castles) graveyards…mist enshrouded, dark deserted roads unseen (but heard) or barely seen creatures, where all you can see in the moonlight are evil eyes.

Interiors : Long dark hallways, dark and decrepit rooms, flickering candles, long dark shadows of unseen creatures.

Some examples
I go into a room, there may be one or two candles illuminating it, just barely, they’re flickering, and as I look around I see shadowy figures moving about, NOT shadowing forms, but actuallyshadows on floors and walls, as if cast by some unseen undead creatures, scurrying about, you can barely hear the murmurs and whispers that seem to come from them.

(another example)
I go into another room, and armed with a flashlight I pan around, I seen in a corner of the room on the ceiling, a figure dressed in torn clothing or in one of those night gowns…decrepit, his back is against ceiling and he’s doing this weird crab walk (kind of like in The Exorcist…in the new version
where Regan is “crab walking” down the stairs). And he’s scurrying about on the ceiling avoiding the light from my flashlight.

(another example)

I go into a cell in dungeon…and nailed to the stone wall in “crucifix” style, is a demonic looking patient…still alive, his face is demonic (like Regan, rather than demonic in the sense of having horns and such)
There is a basement window shaped in the form of a crucifix, so that the moonlight passing through shines a crucifix onto the wall where the guy is, and he’s breathing heavily and you can see his breath, as he’s
in torment every time the crucifix of light touches him.

For the actual monsters …

  1. humanoid kind - possessed…diseased…warped looking individuals

  2. non-humanoid kind - something from hell, but not reptillian looking or scifi aliens from mars looking. organic monstrocities, kind of like those in John Carpenter’s “The Thing”

The working title for game is Shadow House
The 3D engine I’m using is TrueVision 3D 6.2 (really 6.5 but 6.5 is in perpetual beta right now)

PaulMuaddib,

Surprised to not see a plethora of replies to this post! Shame with all the talent in here.

I happened across this post, and see it is more than a few months old?

I would like to help, if you are still seeking such.

My official background is in Special Makeup Effects,
See: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0905395/

Character and creature design are amongst my favorite things. I did work on “Exorcist 3” and John Carpenters “The Thing”, with Rob Bottin, if that may be helpful in having some insight into what you’re looking for, and/or right up your alley?

You may email me directly at the address below:

id also like to be a part of this, id like to see what you can do though so we all know were not going to waste are time creating monsters for nothing.

I am a creature/monster designer. newbie but I think or feel I could supply you with some pretty interesting characters. anything human though id like to work off of someone elses base mesh that is fully functional in 3rd party app. but I could create flying heads, monsters, sea creatures, murderers, possed beings ect ect. let me know what your main things your looking for and I will come up with designs for it. my email is [email protected] if you want to email me samples of what you can do and to stay in contact. I will show ya some other things I havent shown here.

sounds interesting though!

Thanks for interest, I sent a pm.

I don’t want to rain on any parade but I have not seen any project being finished with TV3D not have I ever seen someone building a level editor or additional helper apps. TV3D is a Graphics engine when I looked at it the last time. Have things changed? WOuld be cool to find a game engine which is affordable and has a modern set of graphics and not the N-3 generation most of them represent… I looked at the Torque engine for a while but the graphics look so dated that I decided not to engage. While researching the engines I found a really cool one but had no time to spend back then. A couple of month ago I looked for it again and had to find out that EPic bought it as foundation for UT2K7… And previous owners can get the UT engine then for a minimal cost… HOWLLLLLLLLLL Speaking of missed opportunities… sighhhh. However, good luck! And if you need a level builder… I made more than 50 for UT2K4, HL2 and Counterstrike. Some won awards 8-). Some were god aweful LOL.

I switching to this engine
http://unigine.com/

TV3D is good engine, but at moment is only suitable for outdoor scenes.
You can do indoor scenes, but because it is BSP based (that is the indoor levels are rendered via BSP engine), this places to many restrictions on the artist and geometry of the level, that I decide to switch.

would love a chance to develop up some demonic characters for ya.
drop me a line if still looking, im fairly new to zbrush, but might be able to send you some concept work

Never heard of unigine before. Looks interesting. But I’d only go for an angine which also allows multiplayer. And this one is single player only. I don;t even know why people bother developing an engine which has no network connectivity… The whole world is network gaming…
ANy case, good luck and most important a lot of FUN!

PS:Seems to be a rather interesting corporation selling it. The development department in Tomsk, Russia. The Office registered in the Commonwealth of Dominica, and the Bank Account in Nicosia, Cyprus. Are you REALLY serious switching to this? hahahaha. I laughed hard when I read that on their site.

What impeccable reasoning. If we follow that line of logic, you’d be walking out the door naked, shoeless, and without a car to drive.I’ve worked with Russian programmers, and they are top notch in the field. Just because the company and the programmers are not American, is no reason not to use their product. The Unigine engine is a top notch, modern 3D engine, and is very good.

Here’s some preliminary stuff…

I’ve got a Haunted House model, and have been using that with the engine.
Unfortunately this model was designed as a “set piece” and is missing the 4th wall. But still is good enough to use and play with, with the engine.

There was a problem with the textures…since it’s only be used for testing, I didn’t want to spend time fixing it. But otherwise it’s ok, I’m going to play with lighting of the scene, and maybe some minor fog effects.

DOn’t get me wrong, I have absolutely NOTHING against programmers from anywhere.
I work together with people from at least 9 nations on a daily basis and enjoy the differences in culture immensely(btw. you imply that I am american… which I am not).
I just have no faith in companies which are set up like this. If you pay for one of the bigger licenses and something goes wrong?! You will not have a handle on anything. Just a thought. Besides all of that… it is kinda sad that there is not a single game engine which is not in a quite experimantal state out there. And that is even more valid for an engine with networking capabilities. I searched long and found nothing but tool kits in various states of development and none with a single accomplished project. Except for GAragegames, but their engine grahics is sub standard in the meantime and the new engine did not come out for years now. Another application which shares the same fate are 3D viz programs for the web. There is simply nothing out there which works very well. But then, maybe that is a good thing as we all go slowly blind from those over flashed websites…

Good luck with whatever engine you chose. Just make shure you don’t waste your money!

Afterfall is a game based using Unigine’s engine.

Looks pretty cool! I downloaded the demo with the construction site. That looks pretty when you enable the high end card features. I can see that this engine would be great for single player stuff and for arch viz and high end things alike.

Hey Lemo

you know of any game engine with multplayer networking?

Well I entred this creative field only because of games and I will be soon creating one maybe not huge but atleast small funny one with multiplayer options.

Any tips and advice will really help.

DirectX has multiplayer support built in, so pick your engine. For example if you get the object code sdk of Unigine, you can simply implement multiplayer features throught the DirectX api… here’s a good book with more info
Programming A Multiplayer FPS In DirectX

Didn’t know that! Thanks!. That might explain why no current engine has build something in by themselves. I wish I had more time… sighhhhh.

Thanks paul
