Im looking for good 3d printer type

Hi All!

Can anyone tell me what 3D printer type is best for printing character models (i.e. Superhero busts, statues etc.) created in Zbrush?

My budget is between 500$-1k$

I would greatly appreciate any and all info and advice. Thanks!

Hi @TheBigs_Bigs ,

I can’t make a recommendation for which specific printer you should buy, but if you are primarily interested in character models-- especially in the miniature scale–then a resin based printer is going to do a better job at capturing finer detail at smaller sizes. An FDM printer (the type that prints on a bed from a spool of plastic filament ) can do good character work if printing at large enough size, but generally can’t compete for fine detail and will require much more post processing work (sanding). If you intend primarily working at a larger size, this might be an option.

Entry level models for any type of printer are available in that price range, but expect a higher learning curve and need for troubleshooting for printers at that price. The better quality printer you can afford, the better they tend to work “out of the box”.

Good luck!

Search Uncle Jessy on YouTube for a lot of videos. Stick to the ones using resin printers which you’ll need for the detail. FDM (filament) printers won’t cut it for the detail.

Popular hobbyist brands are Elegoo, Anycubic, Phrozen but there are loads of others.

As a point of reference I have an Elegoo Mars 3 with which I printed this great sculpt (not mine) 3D Print of Shryka - Full October 2020 Patreon Release by CFF (myminifactory.com). Had to print in pieces. There are larger format printers in all the popular hobbyist brands.

Browse and/or ask on subreddit r/resinprinting

Have fun.
