If one buys 4R7 what when 5 arrives?

Hello folks.

I have a simple question. A friend of mine asked what would happen if he purchased 4R7 [the last in a line of upgrades] until 5 arrives [with full official 64 bit support], would that mean he’d have to re-buy again when 5 arrives or would a 4R7 purchase be upgrade-able to 5 some year or two down the line?

If so would it be best to wait until 5 comes out ?

That might take a long time, but at least he’d be able to patch up through the levels of 5 series, keeping him in the game for longer where upgrades are concerned…

appreciate any thoughts.

No one knows. Pixologic haven’t announced their plans, and probably won’t for some time. They may not know themselves yet.

In the past, Pixologic has given updates to registered owners for free. They have stated that will change at some point. It is always best to assume you’ll have to pay some sort of upgrade price or even full price for the next version, then you can be pleasantly surprised if otherwise.

If having to pay an upgrade price is a problem, then you probably shouldn’t make any decisions yet. ZB 5 probably won’t be out for some time, however. You should only buy software based on what it offers you right now.

From my experience all upgrades since 3.5 up to 4r7 were free. (dont know how it was before 3.5)
If somehow we will have to pay for upgrade from 4r7 to 5.0 than probably it will be small fee and the price for new license of 5.0 will be increased by that amount. That’s only my speculations about 5.0 price.

Thanks for the speedy replies, much appreciated

It’s really not prudent to make any assumptions. Don’t take anyone’s speculation into account if you’re making a financial decision, and that’s all anyone can offer you–speculation.

If your purchase decision is based on the requirement of getting the next program version for free or cheap, then don’t make the purchase. If you think the program offers you a good set of tools that will be useful now and in the future, even if you never get another update, then buy it. It’s that simple.
