i7 920 Question

Im using Z brush and photoshop for 99% of my work. I read the V card wasnt important to Zbrush I was planning on ordering a customized HP i7 920 to get me by for a little longer on the inexpensive side so I found this HP but Im not sure what video card to choose. I have to choose one of the 4 and Im using 23" moniter so not sure if it matters for that. Ive read pages about them but most reviews are geared for gaming.

All under 1400.00 Specs are:

Intel® Core™ i7-920 processor (2.66GHz, 1MB L2 + 8MB shared L3 cache with QPI Technology

8GB DDR3-1066MHz SDRAM [4 DIMMs

not sure which to choose of the following:

  • 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4350 [DVI, HDMI, VGA adapter] [subtract ($169.00)]

  • 768MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600GS [DVI, VGA, HDMI] [subtract ($120.00)]

  • 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 [2 DVI, HDMI and VGA adapters] [subtract ($50.00)

  • 1GB ATI Radeon HD 4850 [2 DVI, HDMI and VGA adapters

thanks

that cpu & ram combo is better than what I’m using, and I can get up to about 15 million polys on a tool before it becomes unmanageable

9600 is fairly weak. the second number is very important for nvidia. ATI I’d not buy at all due to bad driver support…so that leaves the gts 250.

I`m using 9600gs, and can only push it up to about 3-4M

does it matter if Im running Vista Home Premium or vista ultimate?

Zennith what processor and ram are you using

I’m using GF9600gs, my computer is: coreduo E4300, 4Gb RAM

zbrush work slowly when few million of polys

I don’t know how impotent is Graphic Card but on GF9600gs Zbrush doesn’t works very fast.

E6750 4GB, Vista32bit

Windows vista ultimate 64 bit should help with memory. unfortunately the different windows flavors all have different max meory amounts and that’s separate from max memory per process.

I am pretty sure zbrush can only use 4gb of ram no matter what but I think only windows vista ultimate or windows 7 can have 4gb for one single process.

IMPORTANT NOTE

i7’s use triple channel Ram switch only works in 3s. so 3gb, 6gb,9gb,12gb etc
u mentioned your’ll get 8gb so its probably only dual channel Ram, make sure u get Triple channel Ram

for graphics card just make sure you get something with at least 768mb, 1GB would be better. zbrush doesn’t use the graphics card at all but if your going to be bringing zbrush stuff into other packages like 3ds max, Maya etc… then you need a decent amount of of video memory. 512mb minimum

go 64bit all the way, i’m hoping zbrush 4 is 64-bit, would be silly if it wasn’t, but at least on a 64-bit system zbrush can use 4gb of Ram. windows 7 is free at the moment but will still be buggy so make sure if you use it your saving all your work and important files to a seperate hard drive from your system drive. i’ve avoided vista and am very happily using xp64 until windows 7 is released.
