I have a possible gig but I need to know how to sculpt this type of detail.

That doesn’t sound good.

I have searched and search and I can’t find any tutorial on Zbrush boolean operations upon a cylinder type object. These lanterns are really cool looking but I have no idea how to go about this on Zbrush.

This can land me a pretty nice job so everyone’s help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

it’s not a boolean you need to be using but a simple mask extract and or group and panel loops.

if you watch Seth’s video all the way through you should learn what you need to do.

Thanks for the video, I watched this before but he did it his model one side at a time, this is not possible with a sphere or cylinder. I’ll keep watching to see. Thanks.

maybe you can follow the tut and bend the parts afterwards to a circle in another program like blender or c4 d with deformers?
or mybe try to contact seth thompson directly for help.

New Zmodeler can do some of this lattice work as well

I gave one of the vases a go, using Booleans and Dynamesh, a little time consuming but this is half an hour of work and no means perfect!

Just create your base shape (from a cylinder), then paint the shape you want with a mask (with radial symmetry on). Then use extract. Done

That is beautiful. When you say extract is by way of the sub tool or deformation, i’m not clear. Thanks for your help. Your model looks beautiful by the way.

Could you please list your steps to create your model. I’m use to working in other 3d packages. You started with a cylinder and was able to hollow out the cylinder and then you used extract. A list of steps would really help me if it’s not asking too much. You have really got me excited based on your renderings. Thank you for your help, I could really use this job.

Extract is at the bottom of the subtool pallette. You just paint the pattern you want using a mask. (you could use an alpha if you want)

Click extract, mess with the settings to get the thickness you want.

Click accept, and then you have a new subtool of the extracted mesh.

You can then sculpt on it (again using radial symmetry).

My sample is crap as I tool 2 minutes do do it, just to get some images.

Here is the process I took, Gordon Robb’s one is perfect too! There are many ways to skin a vase in Zbrush!

Thank You guys so much for the help, this is great! I’m going to kick back, put on some nice tunes, and practice each method. What a great day it’s going to be all because of you guys! Much appreciated!

@Wyattfox You said you used Zbrush’s new polygonal modeling tools to make the vase??? Which ones may i ask???

I am having trouble using the sub tool extract feature. As you can see with the images, I mask a circle. I then invert the mask. I then use extract
from the sub tool panel and I end up with a hole that doesn’t penetrate the cylinder. The hole as a back wall that is driving me crazy.
I want to end up with the example you guys showed me earlier. Please help.
Thanks.

You should have 2 sub tools the original and the extracted one - delete the original one!You could just turn off its visibility- its the eye symbol in subtools to get the same effect.
Also try playing with radial symmetry-y axis- in the transform menu it will speed things up!

Yeh, as Sprinfield Jack (awesome name) says, what you’re seeing there is both sub-tools.

I do it the way Gordon does, except instead of extracting directly from the mask, I edgeloop the mask (ctrl-shift-e) so I can polish by groups.
Then I delete the groups I don’t want and extract the rest.
