For some reason im having trouble masking up to a certain length. im trying to create polygroups

Drag the mask half way down the next ring or polys and it should snap back to the next fully mask part.
Instead of masking, you could hold down Ctrl & Shift and drag out a selection marquee around the poly’s you want to group. Then, with the rest of the poly’s hidden, click Group Visible.
