Human anatomy for ZBrush sculpting

Hello,

I am a lousy ZBrush newbie, but I really want to learn because I consider
Zbrush the most exciting application I ever used.

What I have the most problems with is human anatomy.
I have a few good books on the topic, but all of them are oriented
for physicians, you know, pretty technical for modeling.

I heard about this course being very good, but it is still in development.
I also purchased some good tutorials from digital tutors and gnomonworkshop.

do u know of any other good reference for learning human form from the
standpoint of 3D artists?

Alan

Hey,
Check out my work, http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=59714, this might help you. I would suggest getting an anatomy reference from www.freedomofteach.com
Hope that helps!
Matt

Hey Alan -

Here’s a few of my favorite books for learning anatomy -

Bridgman’s Complete Guide To Life Drawing - George Bridgman - thouroughly breaks down the figure and anatomy, in a very structual approach i.e. what the primary shapes are and how they relate to each other etc.

Artistic Anatomy - Paul Richter & Robert Beverly Hale - Anatomical reference for artists. This is my go to book when I am trying to figure something out.

Master Class In Figure Drawing - Robert Beverly Hale & Terence Coyle- Life drawing/figure building/anatomy/interpretation/structure of the figure and it’s forms. Uses masterworks as examples.

Anatomy Lessons From The Great Masters - Robert Beverly Hale & Terence Coyle - Breaks down and analyzes master drawings. Analyzes the anatomy of the figure, as well as explanations on how and why said artist interpreted the anatomy in the way they did.

Force; The Key To Capturing Life Through Drawing - Michael D. Mattesi - Not necessarily a book for studying anatomy, but a book that breaks down the dynamic nature of the body really well, capturing force, rythm, gesture etc.

So yeah, George Bridgman and Robert Beverly Hale are great and have a large body of work. Andrew Loomis and Glenn Vilppu are also really good. Some Loomis books can be found for free online, somewhere, not sure where though. I actually found some Hale lectures on VHS at my local university, which were great, and quite rare.

And of course, lots of practice. Life drawing sessions, self portraits, sketching at the busstop, etc.

I’m finding ZBrush a great way to learn and improve my anatomy knowledge as well…

Enjoy your journey…

Thank you very much for you help.
I now have tons of resources to learn from.

Matt your work is amazing, just what I needed. I am going to print them out
in color.
