How It All Started
About a year ago I tried ZBrush for the first time. While I was trying to find my way around the program, I saw the option to enable radial symmetry, and tried it on a cylinder. The results blew my mind.
I spent about an hour drawing patterns with it. A single curve could create an intricate patterns in seconds!
I was so impressed by radial symmetry, I decided to make a game where your could draw with radial symmetry, but without the distraction of a powerful 3d sculpting software. As I was very familiar the the Unity3d game engine, I made my first prototype there.
This is what I was able to draw:
Its worth noting that I am not a professional artist. It just turned out that radial symmetry makes drawing a lot easier.
I considered making it into a finished app, but making the UI in Unity was really hard, so I decided to try something different.
Moving On
I made a version of the game with HTML 5 but it was too slow, so I decided develop the app for Android.
After downloading the Android SDK and spending a couple of days reading tutorials and trying to understand Androids philosophy, I started recreating the game. It took a lot of times. I added new stuff like an option similar to ZBrush’s lazy mouse, created a cool brush settings window with changing icons, and even added a new mode of symmetry.
The most exciting moment was when I first managed to draw something really beautiful. It was in the evening, and I suddenly realized that now nothing stops me from drawing anything I what. I could really draw something beautiful, but with such ease…
Two of these drawing are from that evening:
I first thought about placing adds in the game, but it turned out to be WAY too annoying.
I ended up placing it on the Google Play store for free, and without ads.
While at the end I didn’t learn to use ZBrush, I am still very happy I tried, as without ZBrush I would never have made this app.
The app is called Radial, and it is available on Google Play.
If you end up creating something beautiful, please share it with me. Its interesting to see what real artists can create with this tool.
Also if you have any feedback, please send it and I will consider it.
It was a lot of fun making Radial. I owe ZBrush a lot
