How to smooth extrusions

Hello,

I was just wondering if someone could help me with this little problem (see image).

I have pulled out these circles from this dog mesh and I cant work out how to make the extrusions smoother. As you can see they look blocky.

I was watching a video recently where someone mentioned to use ‘smooth by edges’ but can’t for the life of me find it.

Could someone please point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Spencer

i would try to pull them out with the transpose tool not extrude as i thin,k it gives much better results, give that ago it may help

You could also try first running the Smooth Groups brush over the polygroup borders. That will give much cleaner edges before you extrude.

There are a few methods to do this specific task. I would suggest that you do an add boolean with a cylinder and dynamesh it and you should have a much better result. The smooth by edges item you are referring to I believe is the polish features in the deformation section under the tools tab. There are several features there. one is polish by features, and polish crisp edges (I think I don’t have Zbrush running to say for sure). You can try those features to help smooth this as well, but If it was me I would do the boolean add feature with dynamesh instead of the extrude especially for a simple shape like a cylinder. There are several other options that come to mind but these will get you there.

You can have a look at a video I did on youtube awhile ago about real extrusion in Zbrush.

You are not exactly doing an extrusion with your methode… you are just pulling a bunch of polys.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I will have a play with the ideas you’ve suggested and watch the video.

Thanks again

here is how i’ve dealt with this before, select the whole cylinder and polygroup it, then select only the cap of the cylinder and polygroup that and add a crease (in the tool palette).
create a layer for fine adjustment.
probably want the body masked before doing anything else.
go to the deformation palette and use the Polish by groups slider all the way, make sure the little radial button is hollow, might have to slide a few times, and alternate with polish by features.
if it is too destructive just adjust in your layer slider.
probably want the body masked before doing anything else.
