How to select isolated from other polygons?

How to select isolated from other polygons to make them polygroup (or anything else)? In 3ds max I can select vertex, edge, border, polygon or element. I’m looking for the last one, in Zbrush.

Could you precise, I don’t see it there.
I already know how to create whole new polygroup division. Autogroup will create many gorups based on separate objects. But how to select one of these?

Watch video "Selection Clipping Brushes " here.

Also, see Working With Polygroups

The Auto Groups feature will create polygroups based on elements.

If you didn’t want to do this across the entire tool and only wanted to isolate one specific element, then you could start by isolating a small group of faces on that element. Then use Tool: Visibility: Grow All to expand the visibility to that element. From there you can create polygroups based on visibility (Tool: Polygroups: Group Visible)

Thanks Cryrid. Although, grow all method is time consuming. I can’t just select some polys and click grow all. I have to select polygons which will not be hidden, and then gow all to whole element, then make a mask for all polygons and then ctrl + w for creating new polygroup for element. Am I right?

Do you have the Axis plug in? Sometimes Polyframe on gives you better idea what and where to click. Maybe a screenshot and a better explanation of what you want to do will get a better answer. You can do so many things with the software, some methods are faster and easier than others. If you have multiple groups, shift + ctrl + L-clicking on one of them will hide the others. Masking is also very useful.

Just isolate a face on the element you want selected, and hit grow all. Now the entire element is visible / isolated. From there you can click group visible to automatically create a polygroup based only on the visible faces (the entire element in this case), without needing to paint a mask and convert it. So if you have the visibility and polygroup palettes already open and waiting, then grouping a specific element from scratch would only take one second of time.

Another similarly quick method would be to just use auto groups from the get go, which would turn every element into its own polygroup. From there it can be quick work to ctrl+shift+click to hide elements and then run group visible on any remaining elements you wish you merge. Clever use of inverting the visibility can also come in handy depending on the goal.
