How to Pose Skeleton without bone distortions

Hi,
I am trying to pose a skeleton to use as an anatomical reference. But the bones get distorted. I would just like them to rotate exactly on their anatomical pivot, as separate, undisturbed pieces of mesh.
Is this possible with zsphere rigs? Or must that be done using transpose?
