Hi folks,
i am looking for a good tutorial which shows me how to use / apply different materials on a tool with different subtools, while still having the tool active (in 3d mode). For example, a face, with eyes. Now i want to have different materials for the eyes and for the skin.
I end up allways having my whole modell adopting the new material as a whole.
Cheers

You don´t need a tutorial, just pick the MRGB option (near the zadd and zsub), choose your material, and then go to the menu Color > Fill object.
The chosen subtool wil be filled with the selected material.
The way you explained it, i allways end up with all subtools adopting the selected material. I dont even need to use the color fill option. I just select the new material and all subtools adopt it …
Cheers

Well… there is what you are doing wrong… yoy are not using the fill…
When you are using tools and subtools, the tool inmediatly adopts the color and material wich is already chosen, because it hast no color or material of its own, you have to APPLY the material.
Again, choose your material, and then go to the menu Color > Fill object.
It will fill only the selected subtool, and then you can use another material in the other tools
The problem was, you have to switch off the texture first. When you have a texture applied and active, the fill object button is not available (ghosted).
But without the texture active, it works like a charm. Thank you!

yesterday it worked,
now it does not. I am doing it by the letter,
MRGB on, fill the selected tool,
select another tool,
repeat process …
and the material on subtool 1 is gone.
I have one tool with a subtool, with a different material.
I made it yesterday, it worked, now it does not.
I am confused
cheers

Use Subtool Master. That is all you need.
Heiner, I understand the problem that you were having- I was having the same one. Hopefully you solved your problem, but if not, I hope this helps.
Following ISK’s advice, I had the same results as you were getting. The material would be applied to both subtools at the same time, even after chosing the Color>Fillobject.
Jaystein’s advice to use Subtool Master was the only way that I could get it to work. If you don’t have it, get it- there are lots of other uses for it.
If you do have it, select the subtool you want, select the material, open SubTool Master and choose Fill. In the dialogue box, choose Color (just the color of the material) Material (just the material attributes, such as the reflectivity, specularity, etc., but without the color) or Color & Material for all attributes. If you have already polypainted on the object that you are trying to change the color or, just chose Material or your painting will get washed out with the material’s color.
