How to make a roundish hole in mesh?

Hi,

I’ve tried just about everything my limited knowledge can think of but really need a solid tutorial on how to make a rounded hole in a lower rez mesh. I’ve built a belt, it’s for the holes where the belt buckle prong goes through. My tries end up with something pretty ugly.

HELP??

Thanks so much

Richard :o

  1. First thing, determine if you really need an actual hole for so small a detail. Is anyone actually going to see it close enough that a simple indentation wouldn’t communicate the detail?

  2. Subdivide the belt, and perform a dynamesh subtraction with a cylinder at a high enough Dynamesh resolution that the hole is captured. Then use Zremesher to remesh the belt back down to lower poly.

  3. Subdivide the belt and paint the holes a long the belt in the form of masking. Invert the mask so that everything is masked except the holes. Use the extract function in the subtool menu at a high enough resolution to capture the holes, and extract a high poly belt object with holes. Then use zremsher to remesh it back down to lower poly.

  4. Draw new topology along the belt that incorporates holes, and extract the new topo with thickness.

Those are a couple off the top of my head.

Thanks very much. The last two are good for me. Yes, there are picky people that might see my non holes as lazy so gotta make this happen.

Thanks again!

Well, thought I’d show you what I managed to do. Used masking, Visibility hid, Modify Topology - Delete Hidden, Edge looped them and then used the Deformation - Polish. Then QRemeshed and got a good hole. Finished them with torus. Looks pretty good.

Don’t know how to subtract using another object. Is there a tutorial for that? Might speed things up a bit! lmao

Your belt is going the wrong way, btw.

I would say that depends on if you left or right handed! lol

After some hunting around I did find a very useful script on line that will make them for you using regular mesh rather than Polymesh.

Go here: http://www.creativecrash.com/zbrush/script/makehole

Downside is you have to register to get it but no biggie, they don’t ask allot of info from you initially so got it and tried it out. WOOT… works great!

Download and throw it into your ZStartup > ZPlugs and look for GuModeling Tools in ZB under ZPlugin.

Oh! Duh. I forgot to mention Curve Bridge:

http://docs.pixologic.com/user-guide/3d-modeling/sculpting/sculpting-brushes/curve-bridge/

Thats probably much more useful for working with low poly stuff and just deleting a few polygons here and there. Sorry. Hard to keep track of all the different ways to approach things in ZB.

Hey, thanks. I really appreciate your taking the time to help me out. Really like that that hole script. Redoing the belt using that. Awesome and fast!
