http://pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Materials_and_SubTools

This tells how to apply multiple materials to a model.

However, ZBrush does not allow a model to be self-transparent. After you’ve applied the materials, you would need to set up a render.

  1. Rotate the model to the desired angle and press M to create a marker at the object’s geometric center.
  2. Turn off the lenses subtool.
  3. Exit edit mode.
  4. Create a new layer.
  5. Invert the subtool visibility (so that only the lenses are visible).
  6. Click the marker on the cavas to draw the lenses. They’ll be drawn accurately relative to the rest of the character.
  7. Switch back to your first layer. Adjust lighting.
  8. Turn off Render>Flatten so that ZBrush can render each layer separately.
  9. Do a best render.
  10. Switch to the lenses layer and let that render complete.
  11. Export your document.
The reason you render the character layer first is because ZBrush needs to know what will be seen through the lenses.

An alternative approach is to use a single layer as follows:

  1. Hide the lenses.
  2. Position the model and place a marker.
  3. Exit edit mode.
  4. Adjust your lighting and do a best render.
  5. Press Ctrl+B to bake the layer.
  6. Invert subtool visibility.
  7. Decrease the Draw>Rgb Intensity setting. This tells ZBrush to draw the lenses transparently.
  8. Adjust the Draw>Refract setting so that ZBrush can create a lens effect.
  9. Click the marker. The lenses will be transparent and refractive.
  10. If you wish to adjust the refraction, turn on the gyro and adjust the Refract slider until you’re happy.
