how to have more standard materials? [Answered]

Hi, I have a newbie question and the search function is not giving back helpful result.
anyway, hope someone can point out some clue, thanks!
the question is:
how can I add new materials? (more than the overall numbers on the palette)

If my understanding is right, even if I fill an object with material A, material A has to stay in the palette to work. so more different materials for different objects would take more existing slots on the palette, right?

I could paste over slots, or simply open saved ones, but I could not find “Duplicate” to increase the overall numbers of materials on the palette (42 existing)

how could this work if I need more than 42 materials for a complicated character at a same time?

thanks a lot!

Save new materials to your ‘ZStartup > Materials’ folder. New materials created from matcaps will be in the MatCap Materials palette and new materials created from Standard Materials will be in the Standard Materials palette. Do not put any more than 25 materials at one time in the ‘ZStartup > Materials’ folder as ZBrush might become unstable. You can have all the materials and subfolders you want in the ‘ZBrush 4R6 > ZMaterials’ folder which would also make them accessable through Lightbox. You can then copy and paste them to the ‘ZStartup > Materials’ folder as needed.

Also you can copy and paste materials without worrying what type they are, so if you don’t want to use the MatCaps you can paste standard materials on top of them, using their slots. So long as you save the project (File>Save As) these modifications will be saved with your work.

thanks for the help, zber2.
I could save out as many materials as I want, but the slots on the material palette is limited. right?

Thank you marcus.
good to know I could use the Matcap slots as well

The point zber2 is making is that by putting material files in the ‘ZStartup > Materials’ folder they will be included in the Material palette when ZBrush launches, increasing the number of available ‘slots’. Just don’t go over 25 files in that folder.

OK, got it! Thanks!
