How to get UV map back?

HI,
When you use UV Master to make a map, then start sculpting or use DynaMesh the UV goes away. Then I run into the problem of having a high mesh with a lot of subtools in the pallet and I don’t want to use the clone because all the suptools disappear and I have to rebuild the scene. Is there anyway to save a uv map, not the texture map but the uv?
thanks!

You can’t use your old UVs as you generated new geometry using dynamesh.
Are you working on clones in UV master?

Yes, generally I work on clones, but when I put use a clone all the other subtools disappear. Is there any way to save the uv?
thanks!

That’s how UV Master works when you select ‘Work On Clone’. Your ztool is still in the Tool palette. It hasn’t disappeared. It’s just to assure that you are unwrapping on the lowest subdivision level of that subtool and, you have to use ‘Work On Clone’ because you can’t ‘Unwrap’ a subtool that has multiple subdivision levels. So, what you would do is, ‘Unwrap’ the clone then click ‘Copy UVs’, select your ztool again and on the lowest subdivision level of that subtool, you would click ‘Paste UVs’ in UV Master.

Your UV’s are part of the subtool and will be saved when you save the ztool or export as an OBJ. You can’t save UV maps seperately.

Also, as beta_channel has pointed out, as soon as you DynaMesh, you change the topology on that subtool so the UV’s you had are no longer valid.

Thanks for the advise! So what would be the best work flow when working with multiple subtools? I like to have them in the SubTool pallet so I can reference the textures and colors that I am using on all the parts. If I loose the UV map on one tool and have to remap it, all the subtools disappear. What do I do, reconstruct the whole scene again? Is there an easy way to put them all back in the same places?
thanks!

They’re still in the tool palette. The thing is it may be in disguise. The subtool that is selected will show up there, not the entire bunch of subtools combined. Give it a good name so you can load it again.

The number of subtools is given in the thumbnail in the Tool palette, which can help you select the right tool again. The image shows the DemoSoldier (vest_1 selected) which has 11 subtools.

Is there a way to have them all go into the same positions after they disappear? I am finding I have to reposition everything again and again.

Thanks so much for your great advise!

:ex: Check Expose, you aren’t moving the subtools when sculpting them, or scaling somehow, that can influence where it is relative to the others. I really don’t know other than that what it could be.

Just to reiterate what I said in post #4 because I have a funny feeling that you didn’t quite understand it. Maybe the following will help.

The body of the soldier now has UV’s. You would repeat the above for each of the other subtools. (another alternative would be to merge all the subtools and use the ‘Polygroups’ option in UV Master to have everything all on the same UV map).

Should help a few folks out, thank you.

Thank you so much for the great detailed explanation of the process. I am so grateful, you are the best!1

THANKS THANKS THANKS A MILLION!!!
