How to get more hPolish brush Intensity

Hi, just a quick question. I’m wondering how to get hPolish brush to have more Z Intensity.

The Z Intensity slider has a max of 100 which isn’t enough sometimes, and in any case I would like it to affect geometry in a stronger way.

I tried using the Strenght Multiplier in the Brush>Modifiers palette but, while it does influence other brushes, it doesn’t seem to do anything with the hPolish brush, probably because of how the brush itself performs.

Thanks.

Hello @edwardvlad

You are correct on both points:

  1. The Strength Multiplier in Brush> Modifiers can be used to amplify the effects of ZIntensity

  2. It is not the nature of the HPolish brush to make dramatic strokes on a mesh, and may not demonstrate much real difference.

You may wish to explore different brushes capable of producing more dramatic effects if the HPolish brush is fundamentally not suited to whatever effect you’re trying to achieve. The polish brushes are, by design, not intended to dramatically displace a mesh surface. Flatten, Trim Dynamic, Trim Adaptive are all potential alternatives.

However, there are a couple general tips that might help you get better results.

  • Sculptris Pro mode can significantly change the experience with certain brushes, and there are situations where you will get more dramatic effects by disabling this mode. This is especially true for brushes with which you may be trying to produce a very sharp edged stroke.

  • Dense meshes are much more resistant to smoothing and displacement. Work on your mesh at lower resolution in order for any brush to have a greater effect on the mesh. One of the benefits of a multi-resolution mesh is being able to drop to a lower level of subdivision to more easily affect changes to the form, while keeping your smooth high resolution detail intact at higher levels of subdivision.

  • If working with a tablet, make sure that your pressure sensitivity or “tip feel” settings are soft enough that you can easily hit the full range of the brush. Overly firm settings may prevent you from getting the full brush effect.

Good luck!

Hello, thanks for the reply.

I was expecting it would be so, since it behaves differently than other brushes.

I just really like to sculpt and concept with the hPolish brush, since I find it manipulates the geometry in a very intuitive way that I can’t exactly replicate with the other brushes.

The Trim Adaptive brush is probably the one that come closer to its behaviour though.

Thanks again.

I’ll add a couple notes:

  • You can change the nature of the hPolish brush to displace the surface to a greater degree, by decreasing the amount of inbed to the stroke, or increasing the amount of influence above the surface in Brush> Depth. This will create a brush similar to HPolish but with a greater visible effect on the mesh.

  • The Adjust Last feature can be used to interactively adjust the effect of the last stroke on the mesh.
