How To Fix Jagged Centerlines

Is there a way to quickly fix a jagged centerline with multiple subdivision levels without exporting>fixing in maya>importing>projecting?
This happens to me quite a bit.

Hello @jfm89

You could try

  1. Switch to Lowest subdivision level.

  2. Activate “Freeze Subdivision levels”. Tool > Geometry > Freeze Subdivision levels.

  3. Perform a Mirror and Weld [Tool > Geometry > Modify Topology> Mirror and Weld] on the Mesh along the relevant axis. You can switch on the Floor Grid to visualize the mirror plane–make sure the ELV slider in the Draw menu is set to zero.

  • Note that M&W only works in one direction, so in some situations it may be necessary to first flip the mesh to the other side with Tool > Deformation >Mirror, depending on which side you want to mirror.

Mirror and weld will force 100% mirror symmetry with a perfect center line. Your center line deviations are fairly minor. Assuming your mesh is not actually off center, with luck most points will be fused by the welding process. If any points are too far apart to be welded and causing a seam issue as a result, the offending geometry can be moved just across the center line where it will be cut off by another Mirror and Weld.

See this recent thread for more information about the process.

  1. When satisfied with your base level topology, unfreeze your subdivision levels in the Tool > Geometry palette. This will automate the process of restoring your subdivision levels and projecting the original detail back onto them.

This worked perfectly. Thanks Spyndel!
