How To Export Obj From Max To Zbrush

Hi all, i want to share my problem here, hahaha

i make a new model - base model and uvw mapping in 3dsmax, and export it by obj file - i'm use zbrush for texturing with zapplink but i have a new problem the result is a broken texture here is the result and the step: 1. base model and export it by obj file [](http://s294.photobucket.com/albums/mm115/herwin-du/?action=view&current=obj-model-from-3dsmax.jpg) 2. texturing in zbrush with zapplink, but i think it's a strange texture 3. the texture final result ("what is this?

here is my step video texturing in zbrush with zapplink: [http://s294.photobucket.com/albums/...fecttexture.flv](http://s294.photobucket.com/albums/mm115/herwin-du/?action=view&current=Noperfecttexture.flv) i don't know where is the mistake? - in 3dsmax when i'm export the obj file? (the parameter of obj) - i don't know how to reset the xform - or in zbrush? here is the obj file, if you want to try: [http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=...2db6fb9a8902bda](http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=1f0e9e2e79e7a562d2db6fb9a8902bda) thank's a lot before i'm waiting for the answer herwin

Hello Herwin-du,

I had the same issue some time ago, here are some tips you should try as they helped me solve the issue.

However, if they don’t work, post again and this time describe step by step what you’re doing.

  1. Set the export option to Default. This means Vertex Scale 1.0 and # of Digits to 6.

  2. Make sure both and UV Map and Mesh are Welded. Sometimes, a model isn’t welded in the UV Map and this leads to explosions.

  3. When Subdividing the model, make sure that the UV is being kept on the original UV as opposed to being divided alongside the model.

  4. If all fails, do this:
-Go to the lowest level of the model (Level 1).
-Export the Model in OBJ format and make sure Quad and Mrg Option are both enabled.
-Import the model back in 3DS Max, make sure that Unify and Single import option are checked.
-Now correct the UV’s and export the model into OBJ format.
-Import the model back in 3DS Max again (yes, Max again).
-Check UV’s again or you can just export it again into OBJ format.
-Optional step, import the model in 3DS Max again (for some people it’s important, for some, not so much).
-Again, export it on OBJ format.
-Now, import the model in Zbrush, make sure it matches the Lowest level SUB-D.
-Now, look and see if the model still is having UV problems or not.

The last step should solve the issue. For some reason, people like me must import and export the model several times before Zbrush gets the correct UV’s in.

If it’s doesn’t work, post what you’re doing so we can help better.

hey, thank’s
it’s work
now i can texturing in zbrush

thank’s again

Sorry to dredge up an older link but I am having a similar problem with eyeballs I made in max and importing them into zbrush into an existing bust I made. When I import and eyeballs they are scaled up about 3x the size they were when I fitted them into the bust in max.

To fit the eyeballs in I exported out my level 4 from ZB of the bust, imported the obj bust into max, made the eyeballs and fit them, deleted the obj bust, attached the eyeballs as one object and exported as obj. I even tried aligning the pivot point to 0,0, and running xforms.

It just always seems to rest the eyeballs back into the busts head at 0,0 and it scales them up 3x.

Any ideas would be great. Maybe I am exporting out the initial bust incorrectly? I did try the above suggestion of setting my max obj export options to default, still the same result.

I can post pics if needed.

Thanks for any help!

post the pic first
and attach the max and obj file if needed
maybe i can help you

thank’s

hi!!

I just wanted to say you thanks since this post has been really usefull to me. i´ve been a couple of days looking for a solution, posting, asking… and fianlly the solution has been the double exporting in max ( ).

many thanks AceAngel for the solution. I´ll link this thread within the one I created yesterday to close it and help some other people that could have the same issue.

Thanks again!!!

I know what you mean. Up-to-date I tried Max 7,8,9 and 2008 and they all have the same issue.

Sometimes I get lucky and use the Reset XRef several times on a model and need to export it once only.

I don’t know how or why, but Maya has the same issue. I have yet to experience it with XSI for some reason.
