How to exit 2d paint mode. How did I get to 2d?

Hi all. I keep running into this problem and have not found a solution.
After finishing modeling I started to use Spotlight to texture my 3d tool. Since I’m trying to learn the hotkeys to speed up my workflow, I sometimes hit the wrong one. Somehow I end up in 2d paint mode without the knowledge to get back to 3d mode.
The brush pallets are greyed out and I can’t even draw out a tool. This last edit session, after I saved the document, I was put into this mysterious 2d paint mode that can’t be exited. I saved the tool before I started using Spotlight to texture my model, so all color information is now lost. When I re-open the document, it is in 2.5 paint mode, no 3d model. I guess that I need to always save the tool, and then the document?
What I have tried:

  1. I cleared all masks
  2. I pressed the T key.
  3. I made sure that my subtool was visible, active, and in paint mode.
Stil, I am stuck in 2d paint mode till I re-start zbrush. Would someone please tell me how I accidentally get into this mode so that I can avoid it, and also, if possible, how to get out of it without starting a new document?

Thanks,
David

There is a bug in R8 that sometimes traps you in 2.5d mode. Simply switch to another tool and then back again, and it should clear.

Otherwise, you must have a 3d tool seelcted, draw it out on the canvas, and enter edit mode (t)

Thanks again Spyndel! I’ll try that next time this happens to me. Patience, patience. It will be worth it I’m sure.
