How to correctly use dynamesh?

Problem with using dynamesh right now is that after few ctrl-mouse drags the poly count is easily 500k while the model still looks very low poly detail wise, and when adding subdivisions the program freezes. So obviously there is something wrong, but dont know what.

Hi there.

First of all, if this is what you meant, DynaMesh is not meant to be used with subdivision.
Normally, DynaMsh is one of the tools ZBrush offers to start working in. Consider it sketching. You start at a lower mesh like 64 or even lower and up to 128 and more ( be careful as a little goes a long while) only when you need additional geometry when refining what you do.
When your DynaMesh sketch is ready, you copy it, use evt. the Decimation Master plugin to reduce polycount, use ZRemesher, project your details unto the new mesh and then you have a mesh with a good polyflow to really start detailing on with added subdivisions.

Second: the number of polys you get with DynaMesh is relative to the size of your object. Small objects will have less polys whilst large ones will have plenty. To judge the scale of your mesh, compare it to the floorgrid. There is no exact measurement system, but when your mesh taikes up the entire grid it is large, and when small in size when the entire grid is visible, it is, small.

Depending on what you are doing, 500K is not extremely much.

If I may say so, a very good way to learn more about DynaMesh is watching Claudio Setti’s series on it. You can find it at the following adress and if you want, you can even get it for free:

Hope this helps and never hesitate to ask!

what i always do (if not using the excellent dynamesh master plugin),
is go to deformation>unify.
then apply dynamesh
in fact this is what the plugin does for you.

this way you have more control over the density of your model.

Thank you for this tip.

I never used Unify before but tried it out immediately.
This will be very useful indeed.

Thanks also for mentioning that plugin that allows more control on the number of polygons of the redynameshed mesh.

Hi, thanks. I tried to rescale the model since its lenght was covering the entire floor, but as the polygon amount got smaller, the models detailes were gone too. Is it possible to scale the model in zbrush afterwards? I am still in dynamesh mode though.

Also question 2: how to transfer wings finger bones to the other side of the wing? See image of issue http://imgur.com/te038h0
