How to capture an image from a DVD rom????

Had this bright idea. I fired up my DVD player in my computer, put in Atlantis, captured a screen image and pasted it in Photoshop. Only thing is it was wacky. It pasted a live image. I couldn’t adjust contrast or anything in Photoshop without the image disappearing and when I closed the DVD player window the image disappeared in Photoshop even after I had saved it! Anyone have any techniques to successfully capture a DVD movie image on their computer?

The DVD stuff is interesting. Because of the technology involved, the image goes through a different process before it is displayed, so the standard windows screen capture won’t work. There are some 3rd party screen capture utilities that will do it
(HyperSnap) but I have not tried any. The best bet is to see if your Software DVD player will do it. Some of them have the feature built in (PowerDVD for example).

Not much help I know. Good luck.

yes, I know the solution, mentat7

it’s as simple as configuring your monitor driver (in the advanced settings) to not use any hardware acceleration.

once this is done, you should be able to capture a screenshot even by pressing the PrintScreen button (on a PC compatible)

Unfortunately HyperSnap didn’t live up to the challenge and changing the hardware accelleration on computer didn’t work either. Double bust. About the best I can get is a screen capture of the window border with no image.

WinDVD v 3 has it as well. hit “P” to save it to a file. What DVD player are you using?

My DVD player is InterActual. It came with my computer (Dell). I have looked through everything it offers and there is no screen capture option.

I have the Dazzle Hollywood DV-Bridge hooked up to my computer through a Firewire port I had installed…With that I can grab any video signal and automatically convert it to a digital format on the way in…
Oh, and I have a DELL Workstation…

Thanks SC. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to buy an external video capture device. That option had crossed my mind.

For me it’s essential, Lonnie…I’m doing a definitive version of ‘Alice In Wonderland’, and need the ability to composite and edit video…Maybe even if you can do without, you should go that route anyway!

I think it’s possible to take a screenshot from a dvd with Hypersnap DX , make sure you enable all hardware accelerations in the configuration of hypersnap. (including DirectX 8) , I also think there is a way with the ordinary print screen button , but holding ‘Shift’ while pressing it seems to capture video images too. I dont know if this works with DVD. Another way would be to find the program Called Virtual Dub or Nandub , they are used to edit or encode video clips. It has a built in capture function with no loss of quality I think.
Hope this helped ,
