How to boolean 2 object to weld into 1 shell.

How can I merge two subtools (objects) together to form one shell mesh with separate PolyGroups.

I have been able to weld these two object and retain their PolyGroups, but I am not able to Boolean in such a way as to just keep the shell and remove the internal Polys.

I screen grabbed my zbrush GUI. It shows two pill shaped objects intersecting.
