How old is too old to break into the 3D CG industry?

28 years old and have only discovered ZBrush last year. Two years ago, I took an online correspondence 3D animation course where I learned the basics of 3DS MAX. Here is some of my 3D MAX work from back then - http://www.kozimor.org/tyrone/3d.html

My zbrush stuff is on my usergallery.

Anyways, I wondering if it was too late for me to try to break into the industry as I have not been able to get a job with anything related to CG. Is it just a matter of perseverance and practice?

It’s not about age, it’s about skill. Take a look at the top row and then at your own work and decide if it is on par for commercial application.

If not, try harder, spend more time on it, watch tutorials, and produce produce produce. It’s a skill based on experience and to get to an acceptable level you have to exercise that skill excessively or the kid’s will run circles around you…

I took a look at some of your animation and it is not helping that the compression makes a mess out of it, and that work has been canceled by the host because of copyright violation.

You need to spend more effort to start to come close to the results expected from free lancers or hired artists today.

Best of luck!

  1. You just squeezed in you lucky dog.

In our business, it has nothing to do with age. I’m traditionally trained (sculpture) an only made major efforts to work on CG specific projects about 13 years ago. I was 36 then. Most of my highly paid work didn’t begin until I was 40. Now I’m a partner in a creative agency that primarily serves games makers and advertisers.

Define break in.

Question is being asked by someone 63 years old ( to put it in perspective)

it’s when somebody enters your house with the intention of stealing something!

in which case, you’re never too old to start!

I was 26 when I got my start in the industry. That was 13 years ago. Back then, however, there was a concern about age as it was hard to find anyone over 30 on a dev team.

Now, at NLG, we often hire people who are in their mid to late 30’s (even 40’s) that have the talent, fit the culture of our studio and have something to offer that will move the company forward.

All I can say is dedicate your spare time to developing your skills. If you want to be an artist in the industry then you must try and achieve the quality bar that is currently being created in todays games.

Don’t give up if this is truly what you want to do.

Have no fears, its the work/demo/portfolio that gets the job. I got my first cg job at 39, it was the work that did it.

even 40’s
Wow that old!!!
Did they have their own teeth?
Incontinence problems?
Erectile dysfuntion?
If you ask their age did they paw the ground?
40’s my god!!!
Make a bet if you ask them where they lived they
had to think about it.
How long did the bus trip back to the nursing home take?
Imagine. (I know farfetched nightmare scenario.)
Imagine. (This will take a stretch.)
Suppose…
Just suppose mind you.
Someone in their…50’s
Wow!!!

IN THEIR 40’S ??..
