How much ram can I use in Zbrush on a PC?

I have 8 gigs installed. I have a question. A lot of these Zbrush guys say they have 32 gigs installed and they can get these huge poly counts on their models. How do they do this? There is a Mem slider that allows the user to up the memory levels. What sliders do I have to adjust in order to use 32 GB of ram? Should I install 32 GB of ram?

Sean

ZBrush is currently 32bits, so you wont gain a boost past 4GB. However, the extra ram will still help if you have several other programs running at the same time.

As Cryrid said, zbrush will only ever use 4gb of ram.
Getting really high counts is possible by breaking your meshes into smaller pieces. Each subtool can have up to 22 million or so points. If you break your model into 5 parts you can handle 100 million points, and so on.

Also, you can always use HDgeo and get up to 1 billion per piece I think.

Thanks fellas, just one more question.

HDgeo? What are the advantages to HDgeo?

Sean

HDgeo has pro’s and con’s. It can be subDivided up to 1 billion points as I said before, but only a small section of the mesh can be viewed at any given point.

If you look in the documents it should give you some good insight into using HD geo.
