how many hours you work in a week (video game insdustry)

hi,
I was wondering how many hours a animator or a modeller work in week. And is this true after the end of project you can pass 1 or 2 months without working. And finally does part-time jobs exist in this insdustry.
thx

Based upon limited knowledge, yes to everything.
Know of people who have worked well over 80 hour
weeks, weekends and holidays.
Deadlines suck for everyone.
Reheated Pizza at 3:00 in the morning and smelling the
other guys in the room ain’t great either.
Gotta love it!!!

thank you

I second that. I come from the movie industry where it is pretty much the same. When deadlines come closer, the sky is the limit in terms of working hours. I have seen a guy work as much as 110 hours one week. On the other hand there are people who manage to get through a project with a regular 50 hours week. So it largely depends. If you can get your stuff done more or less in time and you personally are happy with the results (that your supervisors have to be happy as well, goes without saying) than you are fine. I guess it depends on your personal investment as everywhere.

The downtime after a project happens for sure - but if your company has a project lined up already you will have to dive into it. I work mostly project-based contracts. So I usually do have 1 or 2 months off after each 2 year project (as I do have right now

Cheers,
Jens.

I came back to live in Britain after a six year spell in Tokyo. I returned because I wanted to see what my wife looked like in daylight  Sony wasn’t so bad, but the small company I worked for before that was very tough; getting back home at 1am was a regular thing and not just at crunch time. I have ex-colleague friends over in Japan who work seven days a week, 10am~3am permanently.

My experience of the British games industry life is better. It’s tough, but I can generally get by with only about eight hours a day, lunch not included.

Don’t expect to have any down time after a project. An efficient company will have work lined up for you.

That said, it’s one of the only jobs where they pay you to make monsters all day long

Cheers,
