How long to learn does it take to learn?

Hi!

For a long time, I have been thinking to start using Zbrush, or maybe sculptris.
I am an artist centered around VFX, composition and matte painting (more than 10 years), with wide knowlegde using 3D and 2D software (Max, Maya, Vue, After effects, Nuke, Photoshop, etc…)

The thing is… I have done docens of 3D models -mainly architecture and environments- but I have never done any kind of sculpture.

I know this questios is a little bit generic, but how long does it take to become a 3D sculptor? I mean, not only learning to use the software, but to make great projects. Something like these https://www.artstation.com/artist/he77ga , https://www.artstation.com/artwork/nEG6 or any of the crazy stuff you can find here.

Thanks!

It all depends. I mean, you’re asking how long does it take to become a good painter, sculptor, etc.

Some people can learn zbrush in 30min to get them started, and master it in a month, but still be a horrible artist for years.
Other people are fine artists already and simply need to transition into a new medium, and they fail.

So it really comes down to you. But I’d say sculpt every day for at least a half an hour and within 6 months you should be able to create decent sculptures, doing all the tech that is required to make full characters can come later. If you can’t make a good sculpture, learning all the other things doesn’t do a thing for you.

eh, my 2cents.
