How do you wrap alpha mask around cylinder with no stretching?

Hello everyone.

I want to wrap an alpha as a mask around a cylinder or ring but I don’t know how to do this without it stretching in some places. My goal is to make topology/mesh from it so is there a better way to begin with like noisemaker etc.

In this picture, you can see it is “stretched” in places on the side of cylinder. Do I have to use UV master and if so how do I do that for a ring?

I also may have to “tile” to make sure the pattern repeats if necessary to traverse all the way around the ring.

I’m pretty good at learning from tutorials so if there is a known youtube video that I didn’t see that shows how to do it then the would be awesome.

What is the best way to apply an alpha all the way around a ring ?

Thanks.stretched.png

if it’s a pure cylinder you can just use radial symmetry. If it is a non uniform shape then the easiest way would be to unwrap the shape and use the alpha based on the UVs.

my 2 cents.

Wouldn’t radial symmetry produce multiple strokes of the pattern and they will run into each disrupting my single pattern?
Thanks for the idea, maybe I’m not picturing the different stroke abilities so I’ll still try it.

I did a sucky job of explaining this but my pattern is actually a single, long .psd that is probably long enough to wrap around a ring.

I probably would to try Noise Maker with UV?

Ah, yes.

I assumed you were using a single piece of your tile, not a large texture with all of the tiles on it.

You can attempt to use the wrap function, but I personally would just use 1 piece of the pattern.
