How do you manage a lot number of subtools? (especially from imported .fbx)

For example, I need to sculpt a skeleton, where each bone has to be a separate mesh:

I found it’s a nightmare for Zbrush. Unlike Maya or Blender, Zbrush doesn’t have an “Outliner”… instead it has the subtool list, which:

  1. Doesn’t by with mouse whell.
  2. Each item occupies a rather large space.
  3. Doesn’t import/export mesh hierarchy from .fbx. There is no way to import/export the folder structure from other apps. That means infinite duplicate work.

I’d like to know how Zbrush guys manage and organize their subtools (besides switching back to Blender… that’s my last resort)

Hello @raincole ,

If you are using the most up to date version of ZBrush, the following features may be helpful:

  1. Folders.

  2. Visibility Sets. At the top of the subtool palette in the current version of ZBrush there are some visibility preset buttons that will remember the visibility state of certain subtools, allowing you to toggle large groups on or off at once.

  3. Remember that you can select a subtool directly in the viewport by Alt or Shift-Alt clicking on it. The ‘N’ key will also bring up an alternate pop-up for subtool selection that may be easier than scrolling through a long list.

:slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you very much for the reply. What’s the difference between Alt-Click and Shift-Alt-Click tho? I thought Shift-Alt-Click would allow me to select multiple subtools, but it seems to do the same as Alt-Click?

Hello @raincole

Some videos that might help you…

You also have Subtool Master plugin.
