How do you allocate more RAM

Hey guys, Im new to PCs, I have 4 gigs of ram how do I allocate my PC to access all 4 gigs. It seems like its only access about 1 gig maybe not even that much. Im getting all kinds of “out of memory” errors. Im used to mac just allocating it all.

Any Help would be great.

More information would be helpful…OS, Zbrush memory settings, the size of the tool or document youre trying to mainpulate when you get these out of mem warnings, etc.

In general terms, you shouldn’t have to do anything on the OS level. IN Zbrush, move the Preferences>Mem>compact mem slider up to the amount of ram you have…which actually controls how quickly Zbrush will go to virtual memory…BUT

If you are on Win XP-86 ( 32 bit), the OS can’t use more than 2gb per application, no matter how much physical ram you have, so dont set it higher than that. You will have to move to 64 bit OS in order to use the full 4 gig, or whatever is available after hardware and the OS has taken its cut.

You use Preferences>Mem>Compact Mem to specify how much RAM ZBrush will use.

If you’re on a 32-bit version of Windows, do NOT set this higher than 2048 or you’ll prevent ZBrush from ever using virtual memory (hard disk).

If you’re on a 64-bit version of Windows, you can go up to about 3200. You should leave the rest for Windows and any background apps you’re running.

I have 12 GB of ram on my pc, and I use XP 64 bits.
Zbrush never uses more than 3GB of it, so, even if I have loads of ram left,
it still writes and reads from HD (and this is sad!)
I found that it helps if in the Windows Task Manager, under Processes,
you right click on the zbrush process and choose Set Priority>Realtime.
This way Zbrush uses 3GB or ram, more or less. If I don’t do this, it would use even less.

…you rock!
