I’ve been playing around with ZBrush for a couple of weeks, so I’m still really green. I have been trying, without success, to figure out how to sculpt quills onto my character. If I try to use the fibers tool, than I can’t go back and edit the main piece, and the snakehook tool doesn’t work right either, unless I’m using in incorrectly. I’ve only used the basic classroom downloads to educate myself, other than trial and error, and I would really appreciate some advice if anyone has any.
There are a couple of approaches that you could take with something like quills, but my tendency would be to sculpt a single quill to your liking and then to drop it onto your model with the “insert mesh” tool… You would have to be careful not to over do the geometry because every new quill would add to the polygon count, but on the other hand, the quality of the quills wouldn’t be dependent on the resolution of the underlying mesh.
elaborating on huans good suggestion you might want to try to make them out of a cube or zpsheres. also once you’re done doing the insert meshing you can split them away from your main model and append as a subtool using polygrouping. this will allow you to not worry so much about polycount, you could also create quill clusters and have a few of those as subtools.
I’ve got my main mesh and quill mesh, I’m stuck again. I’ve read the documents on mesh inset, but nowhere on my interface can I find meshinsert dot or meshinsert fit. Unfortunately, i’m only working with the trial, so I don’t know if perhaps its a feature that’s only with the full version.
