How do I change the origin of my subtool?

Originally my friend told me my subtools were too large and that was probably why I was having trouble dynameshing the high res subtools together (which was raising the res even higher into one subtool, and Zbrush would crash). I’m working off a laptop, so it’s not that strong. I selected all my subtools and I shrunk them down, but I guess I went too small. Since Spyndell told me a size of around 2 is ideal I brought them back up to around 2. I think it’s still smaller than they were when they were too big.

But, what are the axis’ up above my subtool? Is that their origin or something? Maybe that’s what was contributing to the view changing when I zoomed in too close and tried to undo or use other commands. Should I try to lower this origin or axis down? How would I go about that?

I’m importing this guy into Blender now to continue working on the uv’s and in blender the first piece of geometry I imported ended up way below the floor, so I thought maybe I should try to figure out this axis thing now. Thanks!

Hello @lowhues ,

I can’t tell you anything for certain about your file without examining it. You would need to contact Support and provide the file for examination. Issues with the size or pivot could be due to any number of variables specific to the export process in your external software, whether you’ve frozen transformations before exporting, etc.

However, a few points to mention:

  1. This model looks too complex for the Dynamesh process. There is too much fine surface detail, and the form contains very delicate or thin sections of geometry which may begin to break apart when Dynameshed. Live Boolean may be a better bet for fusing the form together.

  2. To return a mesh to ideal form for ZBrush, use Tool> Deformation> Unify. This will correct many issues related to suboptimal size or offset.

  1. I don’t actually see any scale issues with the mesh in the screenshot. The size seems within normal range of use. There could be an issue with an extreme offset from center, but I can’t tell this from the screenshot. If you see a large value associated with the X, Y, or Z offsets in Tool> Export for this tool, that would mean that that is the the distance ZBrush had to adjust the mesh to return it to center in order to work with ZBrush. Normally ZBrush just records this value and restores it to the original position on export, but meshes that are extremely offset from center in the original file may experience some issues.

  2. Dynamesh will not crash as a result of mesh size. In most situations that shape of the mesh affects Dynamesh results, but the size does not.

If your tool is crashing with the Dynamesh process, there is a decent chance of problematic mesh geometry. Make sure to check every subtool involved for issues with Tool> Geometry> mesh Integrity> Check mesh.

Good luck!

Thanks @Spyndel. I don’t know if it would’ve made a difference in your answer, but I was referring to the origin up above my subtool. I was already able to dynamesh the subtool I needed to dynamesh, so I’m ok in that regard.

I understand you can’t tell me anything without examining my file and I’ll have to contact Zbrush support if I need more help.

I guess my question is, is it normal to have an origin or axis or whatever it might be called up there in the air like that?

Did you find a fix for this?
