How Do I Change My Default Brush on Startup?

Zbrush automatically opens with the Standard Brush selected. I want to change that to the Move Brush so that it is selected each time upon startup. My Move Brush is located in the Startup - Brush Presets file. I have tried selecting it in the UI and storing the Config and restarting Zbrush, but no matter what I try, it always come up with the Standard Brush selected on startup. Am I missing something? I’m using Zbrush 2022.

Hi @Missy

After you select the Move brush, go to “ZPlugin > ZStartup Utility > Store Current Brush”, then click “Install Custom Startup” at the bottom. If you don’t have ZStartup Utility, you can get it here.

Hi ZBER2,

Thank you for your response. I did what you said. When I clicked “Install Custom Startup” I got this message:

Now what??

Hi @Missy

Which version of ZBrush are you using? Was the plugin already installed?

I have version 2022.0.8. To be honest with you, I don’t remember if it was already installed or not.

@Missy

You didn’t download the one in the link I gave you and install that did you?

No I didn’t because there was already a Zstartup Utility on my Mac. I just don’t remember if it came with my current Zbrush version, or if I had downloaded and installed it at some point later. But no to your question.

Should I delete my current copy and download the one in the link you gave me?

Something you can try first is, go to the ZStartup Utility plugin and click “Uninstall Startup”. Then restart ZBrush. Then try the first instructions I gave you again.

After I clicked “Uninstall Startup” I got this:

Maybe I should just go in to my File manager and delete it that way?

I’m on ZBrush 2022.0.8 also but I am on PC. As far as I know, there isn’t a seperate page to download Plugins just for Macs so I imagine they work in both. Instaed of deleting the plugin files, just put them aside somewhere. The files are in “ZStartup > ZPlugs64” There should be 2 files and a folder. Then download the plugin from the link I gave you and install that. I have that one installed and it works for me. There will be install instructions in the zip file you download.

Okay. I’ll give that a try tomorrow and let you know how it works out. Fingers crossed.

Thank you.
Missy

You’re welcome.

NOTE: ChatGPT just told me that plugin won’t work on a Mac which is why you are getting the errors. It would be nice if they mentioned that on the plugin download pge.

You could just make the brush more accessible on your UI. I keep brushes I use the most at the bottom of the UI.

If you don’t know how to do it, see my post here.
