Hi @nutellino_67!
You will lose detail any time you eliminate the polygons that were creating it. How to preserve the appearance of high level polygon detail on a lower poly mesh is a complicated subject, and much will depend on the intended output.
If working for output in Zbrush only, this isn’t a problem because ZBrush has very high polycount potential. Simply subdivide your mesh to the desired level of detail, sculpt and render at whatever resolution you wish.
If working for 3d Print output, Decimation Master is usually the way to go. Decimation Master keeps the points that are creating the fine detail, and eliminates them where they aren’t contributing. Most software associated 3d printing can tolerate meshes up to medium polygon density, and Decimation Master works best in this range. Force it to reduce too far, and you will start losing detail, but most 3d printing is limited in the amount of detail it can reproduce in any event. Decimated geometry is problematic in a number of ways, but 3d print isn’t overly concerned with surface topology.
Not every program can work well with that many polygons though, and decimated geometry doesn’t work well with many other processes. If working towards digital render in another program, you must learn how to create normal or displacement maps that capture that detail at the highest levels of subdivision, and export them as images that can be applied to a lower-poly version of your mesh in another program.
This is a broad subject that will require understanding a number of general 3D concepts, a number of specific concepts in ZBrush, and familiarity with how to get the best results in your specific target program–every program does things differently.
In Zbrush, you must understand:
Additionally, you should understand and be comfortable with Detail projection. This will be useful to transfer the high poly detail from one mesh to another. For example, this would be used if you wanted to transfer the high poly detail from one mesh, to a re-meshed version of that mesh with a low poly base and multiple levels of subdivision for use in a texture export process.
Sorry to throw so much at you, but as you see you have some studying to do . There are many tutorials floating around on the individual aspects of the things I’ve mentioned here. Be sure to start in the Pixologic ZClassroom. Don’t forget, you must also understand your destination program well to get the best results!
