How can I resolve overlapping edges (without smoothing?)

Still really new and doing a lot of learning-by-experimentation, so forgive me if there’s some glaring rookie mistakes here, but I’ve been trying to actually use polygroups (and zremeshing, both of which I have pretty little experience with) on the extremities of my model in order to better define the areas I’m working on as I’m working on them, but sometimes that involves moving pieces of the mesh around so that they end up overlapping with other polygroups, and when I try to smooth them over just using the smooth brush, it gets very messy. I’m wondering what it is I could do to combine or smooth these things into, say, one edge loop instead of five overlapping ones, without sacrificing the clean and relatively lower-poly setup. Just attached an example of what it looks like in case I described it very poorly.

zbrush question

Hello Wren,

Are you ZRemeshing the piece all at once, or are you only partially ZRemeshing certain areas at a time, or with the Freeze Borders option? Why is the resolution different in different areas? This will generally provide poorer results than ZRemeshing the mesh all at once.
