How can I put detail on the character in zbrush and than export the model to Maya?

I would like to put some detail on the characters body. See image. The problem is that I have a Maya model and the detail I want to put on is hard to paint on the high res. model in Maya. The Character will be output to an STL file for Prototyping. I use the stl file converter by Rob Oneill.

When I put a displacement map on the model it shows up when I render the model but not in the STL file right?

Is zbrush the best way to put intricate detail on the body?

Do I have to paint the design on the body in Zbrush or is there another way?

What is the fastest way to put the detail on?
