How can i preserve the edges on this axe

Hi, im currently working on this axe. Its fan art for world of warcraft, the axe’s name is Last Laugh.

there are a lot of edges on this axe and i would like to preserve them, but the sharp edge of the blade itself needs to be smoothed out (along with the visible tri's/quads on the edge..yuck) but i cannot, for the life of me, find a way to do it. any help would be great :D the pic is shown below

I’m a newbie but have you tried masking? Hold ctrl and highlight the very tips of the blade. Then while still holding ctrl click on the masked area to smooth it.

you should add extra edge loops close to the sharp edges

the best way would be to add support loops to the edge you’re trying to make hard

Working at your lowest subdivision level, create polygroups that meet along the edges you need to keep sharp. (Do this by using the Lasso select to hide parts of the mesh, then press Tools>Polygroups>Group Visible to create a polygroup.) Once you have create the polygroups select one at a time (Shift+Ctrl+Click a group) and press Tool>Geometry>Crease to crease its edge.

Having creased the edges they will remain sharp when you subdivide.

See here for more info on creating polygroups:
