Hollowing out an object

Another newbie question. I have figures that I need to hollow out before I print them. I see lots of tutorials on how to hollow them but they all leave a hole some place on the object. I don’t want to leave a hole. What is the easiest way to get back the geometry lost when the hole was created?

Thanks, Alan

One method would be:

  1. Duplicate the original model which will provide the exterior.
  2. Create the interior with a hole.
  3. Turn on polyframes and Shift+Ctrl+click the mesh twice to hide the exterior.
  4. Turn on Tool>Display Properties>Double so you can see the interior.
  5. Shift+Ctrl+click the hole portion to hide it.
  6. Delete everything that is hidden by pressing Tool>Geometry>Modify Topology>Delete Hidden.
  7. DynaMesh the interior to fill the hole.
  8. Turn off Tool>Display Properties>Double and press Tool>Display Properties>Flip to flip the normals for the interior.
  9. Merge the original exterior and the interior.

An alternative way, if your model is symmetrical, is to offset the hole and then use Mirror And Weld.

But note that the point of the hole is to allow the printing material to be drained!
