Hiroyuki Sanada Likeness Attempt (WIP)

Hello everyone. This is my first post here. I’d like to share this recent sculpt of mine which is my second attempt at sculpting a likeness. Something looks off to me and I’m not really sure what, so I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Here he is with the beard removed for a better view of the jaw.

Its looking good, I could spot the likeness in the thumbnail. the eye area is good, but you need to lift the cheekbone, check the lips and definitely rework the chin / jaw line.

Thanks for the tips, johnchen. As suggested, I worked more on the cheek bones, lips and jaw. I also fixed the nose a bit.

looking better, I have a quick paint over, the main observation is he is missing a major plane between his cheek bone and jaw. paintover1.jpg

the sculpt is missing some sharp transitions where the bone / skull underneath is more prominent.
here is a study I did a few weeks back looking at planes of the face, hope it helps https://www.artstation.com/artwork/Z0z08

Thanks again for the tips! I saw your comment just now so I wasn’t able to make the corrections for this update, but I’ll definitely work on those. For now, here’s a polypaint update.

looking good.

Here’s the latest update. I fixed the sculpt some more and I also started bringing it into Maya and Renderman. High frequency details in both the sculpt and the texture seem to fade a bit with a subsurface shader, so I’ll have to rework those.

Here’s another update. I made the regions around his eyes and mouth fleshier, improved the detail sculpting and improved the textures.

I LOVE YOUR WORK CAN YOU DO A STEP BY STEP viDEO TUTORIAL ON MODELING REALISTIC JEANS AND DOING DETAIL FROM A FIGURE IN T-POSE IF POSSIBLE

IM A NOVICE AT ALOT OF THINGS THATS WHY I WANNA SEE YOU DO IT STEP BY STEP VIDEO TUTORIAL USING ZBRUSH TO CREATE A BASE MESH BECAUSE I NEVER SEEN IT DONE WITH ZMODELER OR DYNAMESH,ALSO TEXTURING BASICALLY SO I CAN KNO THE ORDER AND SEE IT LIVE,I ALSO HAVE A PROBLEM CREATING FRONT POCKETS AND SEAMS AND STITCHING THE LINKS BELOW SHOW REFERENCES OF KIND JEANS I WANT MADE

liking the groom, the skin shader feels off, not enough SSS. Are you using just a domelight ? I find sss does not react well to domelights in Arnold. also the skin diffuse texturing feels flat. great job man, its coming along.

looking good so far
I think his eyes could be a little bit smaller though

nice portrait!!

Thanks again for the tips and comments! I went to shrink the eyes as suggested, but then I noticed it was more than his eyes that needed shrinking. Somewhere along the lines of my edits I must have shrunk the bottom of his face and he ended up with a huge skull. I thought his hair was too fluffy in the previous WIPs. Apparently his head was just huge. Here’s the current edit with edited proportions and an improved skin shader.

yeh, this is looking much better, leveled up

I was starting the final lighting, but I couldn’t get the skin to look right in those lighting conditions. I decided to just redo the skin details and hopefully this will look better in the final lighting setup.
