high polycounts, how?

Hi guys,

I was wondering what is the maximum polycount that you guys normally reach until zbrush starts getting slow and difficult to work with, i’m running it under XP64, with 4 gb or ram and it gets quite slow around 6-8 milion polys, and I was expecting to reach higher values, i’ve seen many people claiming to use 15-20 milion polys but that has never been my case…any help/ideas/comments?

cheers

With 4 GB of RAM, about the most you can reasonably expect to hit is 12 million. At least, that’s true of the PC version. 3.12 pushes those limits quite a bit higher.

Of course that means that if your model is anything higher than 3 million polys, you’re at the max that you should expect to be pushing because another subdivision level will break the bank.

The magic doesn’t come from number of polys per SubTool, though. It comes from being able to split your model into multiple SubTools and push the total poly count even higher. You will work much faster and more effeciently with 4 SubTools of 6 million polys each than you could with a single SubTool of 12 million polys.

Reviving this post to make another poly count question.
If I have a xp64 and 8 GB of memory. What poligon limit should I configure?

thanks

1 million…ooops sorry ah-hehm 1billion!

Set for no more than double the default setting, which ZBrush chooses based on your RAM. However, it’s also possible that ZBrush won’t save that setting – it has a maximum value that it will save, which is the maximum recommended level for performance’s sake.
