Hi, I need help with Zbrush 4R3 , i cannot poly paint onto my model? please help!

I dont know what to do in order to prepare my model to begin poly painting?

Ive read up about deleting the UV map although that button is greyed out and i dont know how to create a UV map.
I have my finished model ready for painting but i dont know how. what i want to do first is apply a skin texture/colour and then paint over it with the higher details.

at the moment i click that colorize button and then i switch to ‘rgb’ mode and i turn Zadd off and when i try paint i get no results.

Are there any good tutorials to help me?

Make sure colour is enabled in your subtool palette next to the tool you’re trying to paint. Make sure textures are OFF in the texture map palette and be sure you’re using the standard brush(not a necessity but some brushes don’t let you paint).

Oh man you are BEAUTIFUL!!!

thanks you so much … you helped me to finally figure this out!

Can i also ask , im creating this dragon and i want all of its skin to look wrinkled in a rough skin , how would i go about doing that?

Texture or material?

neither texture nor material - you should sculpt the wrinkles;

helpful tools for wrinkles are: alphas, projection master, surface noise plugin

you will get the best result by using both good alphas AND sculpting by hand

Okay thanks for the reply but please elaborate on what you said there:

Why is the projection tool so good and what can i do with it? ( i will research this its just nice hearing from a fellow Zbrush fan)
also how do you create an alpha and know what sculpting will come of it ?
is the black area for untouched parts and the white for what the stroke will actually create on the surface?

Alpha’s are your best bet imo (it’s what I’m more comfortable with anyway, thus more bias). You can create one in Z-Brush by sculpting on a plane then using the Alpha ‘Grabdoc’ feature or create on in something like Photoshop and import it.

The white area is the affected area (depends on Zadd, Zsub, RGB etc…) but it can easily be flipped, rotated and inverted.

As for its effect, well that’s just good old trial and error ^^ Have a play with the setting and try the alpha with different brushes for different effect, it’s a really fulfilling and fun exercise :smiley:

So theoretically if i wanted too i could draw a scale onto a plane and grabdoc onto an alpha and then i have the scale to use whenever and however i want?

I could just paint scales on thereafter?

i once read an interview from a cg veteran; asked if he could tell something funny about cg he said something like this:

"sometimes i read posts like “what happens if i do this?” or “what happens if i hit that button?” - that´s so funny, because it would be faster to try out things instead of asking questions like these.

i really don´t want to offend you, but it´s extremely important to try things out, play around, have fun;

besides this you will find all workflows like “using alphas”, “using projection master” etc. via google

and to answer your question above: yes.

Hey Delrog,

I asume you are new to zbrush and when I was starting out I was very impressed by the level of support offered by the ZBC Comunity. Heres a link to a PDF offered by pixologic … it is super helpful and will definately help you become a better artist and best of all … Its FREE !!!
http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/getting-started/

This covers everything you need to help you get started, just as the title mentions.
Hope this helps. Happy Zbrushing :slight_smile:
