Hey all, first WIP posted.. a Beast w/dragon-like head

Hey all, i’m a big fan of zbrush, and this website, up until now i’ve just been a casual viewer, havn’t posted any of my own works! Welp, i’ve had a lot of free time lately, and i’ve been conceptualizing a beast I’ve been wanting to create for my modelling portfolio… It’s a WIP still, and I plan on bringing this (almost finished) Base model into zbrush for finer detailing soon!
All comments welcome, and I look forward to responses, feel free to critique.

modelled in Maya using CPS (poly based proxy modelling), conceptualized by myself.

Hey Runegod. Cool concept.
Like the flow and the clean lines.
I think it will have a great time in zb.
Good luck. Looking forward to see more.

I like the style !

I think you should work more on the global shape and add more details after that.

It’s very good for a first post well done

Gopher

I like this very much. Reminds me of a certain rabbit concept. Spiked tails are always in fashion!

that first pic was actually a bit earlier, i had made some updates (some work on the fingers, etc)
so here’s another pic with the proxy wireframe as well.

jais- thanks! I’ll definitely be posting more soon

gopher-as far as the ‘global shape of it’ needing work, anything specific you’re thinking of?

jason-haha thanks, never saw that rabbit, was it on this forum?

omg, your edge loops need work!
i got a perfect example for you,
when i restarted to get back into 3d after a 2year break i had the same problem.
trust me its very crutial to get the loops!
heres a nice link with a explanation.

in my thumbnail, it took me 3 tries each from scratch to get it right.
when you quadrilate to bring into zbrush your mesh wont be even,
its will be real dense in some areas and scattered in others.
plus, you really dont need so much detail in a modeling package like maya,
make it extremely low poly and detail and alter the mesh in zbrush.
zbrush has vertex moving capabilities,
and a far friendlier push and pull system.

aceala - thanks for the crit…
first off though, i’m not actually ‘really’ concerned about the edge loops in this, its not ‘really’ all that humanoid, and anything i’m going to deform, if at all, will be alright…
as far as the integration into zbrush, i actually did this from scratch, so all the detail you see there really isn’t possible without the lines i’ve put in where i’ve put them. as far as zbrush having a friendlier push pull system, you’re right, but this is the first model from maya that i’ll be bringing into zbrush, so i did as much detail as i felt comfortable making in maya first, (having more experience in that) i don’t really plan on doing too much ‘bigger’ details in zbrush… but lots of smaller ones, like bumps, creases, wrinkles, scars, etc etc…
we’ll see how it ends up bringing into zbrush though… i’m not prepared to work from scratch on this ;p it came down to a ‘trust’ factor, i didn’t trust zbrush in it’s control for the larger details, in my control of them anyway… (merely, my lack of expertise with it!)
so for this model i’ll keep it to ‘smaller details’ in zbrush.

btw, anyone recommend any specific textures and alpha brushes i might be able to try out on this one?

I’m not a big supporter of the insanity some follow for edgelooping, however I can say that you could use some streamlining!!!

here’s my current WIP update on my beast. i have added some detailing and minor adjustments to the shape and stuff.

I will be doing the Horns, fingernails, and teeth seperately, and then adding them back together in maya or another program for final rendering. I will add another update when i have them done as well,
and then after that, colouring and final texturing. C&C welcome

Looks ok, the skin texture is repeating too much. It’s funny how many people are doing the hole in the forearm approach these days. I guess it’s the trend.

jason belec - if you say so, but if you pay attention, there’s lots of different attributes i have put on this guy, and I personally can’t think of any ‘hole in the middle of the forearm trend’ that you’re referring to… i came up with that on my own, as well as the hole in the leg (both on the side of the leg, and in the front) so as far as i’m concerned it’s unique ;p

as far as repeating texture, yeah i’m gonna be refining that later on, thanks for the input.

hypnotik put some nice alphas in this thread

meybe they will be better for the skin details ;]

Wow! That’s a nice concept you got going there. The only thing that I notice, other than your edgeloops, is his back spike. One of them is kinda funky, or is it supposed to be that way?

slocik - thanks for the link, i’ll try some of those as an alternative!

zangst - thanks! and yes, that one horn is actually intentional, its a chipped off broken horn, like the 3rd one on his head, but it will be refined in zbrush

thanks for the comments so far guys

runegod, shame on you. You may not be aware of others having done that type of structure before you, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. In fact you would really be hard pressed to do something truly unique when you consider the possibilities on a global scale.

Atwooki has had this feature for many months…

I can guarntee it, as he was doing it before I borrowed his concept for the surfing cyclops on the ‘Eternal Zsphere Thread’.

I have also seen it on several threads on CGTalk.

All that said, I really don’t care. You have a nice character and you may not want to admit it, but you are influenced by what you have seen.

lol sorry jason, i probably wasn’t completely clear, and i was taken aback by your comment abit only because there didnt seem to be any positive side to it…, but merely ‘its ok’… that aside, what i meant was “I hadn’t seen it , so to me it was unique” it was not at all implying it hadn’t been done before, as i’m sure everything art wise, has some aspect already done, somewhere. there’s tons of talent out there (and LOTS in this zbrushcentral community). I know mine’s probably not the first with it, I just wasn’t aware of any ‘trend of it becoming common’.

so what i was saying was i specifically didn’t copy anyone’s work… its true, we all get inspiration from everyone else’s work… so i figured maybe you thought i had taken that part from someone else’s… i misunderstood.

lol, dont let him bother you. as frenchy constantly says, happy zbrushing:D
