Hendrik Freuer - Sketchbook 2012

Hi there,

I’ve decided to open a new sketchbook for this year with stuff that I have been working on in the past few months.
Most of the pieces are still WIPs. Hope I can finish them at some point

I’m going to start with a few models that I started at the end of last year, but haven’t posted them anywhere, so I thought
I just put them in here as well. I will be posting more and newer sculpts over the next few days.

C&C is very welcome!

thanks for looking

A concept I made a while back to try out the new FiberMesh

all great works love the axe head !!! :+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:

here is an insectoid/alien. still wip…

Here is a character that I started during the Creature Design R2 class with Cesar Dacol Jr.

I played around with the plating a little, but have to change it again, cause some areas don’t really work…

and this is the low-poly version after retopologizing. tried to optimize it for animation. still have to see if it works

If you want to optimize it for animation you might want to add some edge loops around the knees and elbows.

there are edge loops around the knees and elbows!?! Or should I make them tighter?

Nevermind, this was just me being tired last night, these edge loops looks ok

hey guys,

here is one that I’ve actually finished. I named it “Regrowth”.
It’s also one of the pieces I created during the Creature Design R2 class with Cesar Dacol Jr.

Some Zbrush screen grabs without texture.

Thanks for looking

And here is a turntable from this model…

For some reason, the floor acted a bit weird when rendering oO

Here is another one that I’ve been working. It started out during the Creature Design class
where we were supposed to create a dragon. I was looking for reference pictures and found some of sea dragons
that I really liked. So, here what would come out if a dragon and a sea dragon had a baby

still have to work a bit on the wings and give this guy some color…

Nice work on the scales, did you used any specific technic or was it just plain sculpt?

I really enjoy your work. It’s technically impressive, but also quite original and singular. I especially love that strange and beautiful sea dragon! Definitely a standout among dragon designs, and the detailing is well done.

I would be very grateful if you shared your method for creating the skin of the wings, which look quite convincing. Nice and thin!

Thanks for sharing.

Terry

so cool!

hey thanks guys!

@Braga.3D: it was just plain sculpt. long process, but definitely worth it. could not have gotten a similar result using alphas.

@SwampGhost: thanks a lot for your kind works. I really appreciate it. I made the wings with zsphere retopology. pretty straightforward. If I have some time this week, I can make a quick video showing the process, if you like.

here is a turntable from the sea dragon. somehow the quality got a bit lost. I’m still new to vimeo… I’ll figure it out at some point

That would be great, if it’s no trouble. I would be very grateful. I’m still fairly new to ZBrush, and many things that should be straightforward still aren’t for me. I have yet to do any retopology, for instance.

Thanks, Hendrik! I look forward to your next post, whatever it ends up being.

Terry

Then you are reaaaally patient! Anyway this seems to be worth doing!

Hey guys,

here is the promised tutorial for making bat or dragon wings. Sorry if it seems a bit long.
Didn’t have very much time for cutting and editing. I already speeded up some parts, but
I guess I should have made them even faster
Anyway, hope this helps. If anything is still unclear, don’t hesitate to ask.

cheers!

Hendrik, thanks so much! Very generous of you to take the time to share your knowledge. I never cease to be impressed and even moved by the general culture of sharing and helpfulness in the ZBC forums. A true community.

Looking forward to watching this! I have a big dragon project in mind (which will probably be a while coming, yet), based on a series of books that I love, and this will definitely help me get a bit closer to making that happen.

Thanks again!

Terry

Edit: Just wanted to say that I took a look at the video, and you were right: It’s a pretty simple process! Very nicely done tutorial, and not long at all. :)
