Help smoothing curvature

Good day guys

I am a complete newbie, just starting out and playing around in Zbrush.

Here is what I am aiming to achieve, with the hope of making it into a tri-part IMM brush:
target

Here is where I am at:

I know I still need to sort out my poly groups before I can make it into a tri part IMM, but my question is, how do I get such smooth edges? I assume I would have to add more geometry, but what would be the best way to get those nice smooth curves, without loosing my crisp edges?

Hello @Tagakoner

To keep the size of your brush down, you would use edge creasing, applied either via Tool > Geometry> Crease menu, or with the ZModeler tool to mark the edges you want to stay sharp, then subdivide the new meshes after drawing them out. If you mark these edges out on the parts of your mesh before creating the brush, it should maintain them as you insert them.

It may be useful to split the parts into their own subtool after being inserted. You can usually do this easily with the Tool > Subtool> Split > Split to Similar Parts action. Once in their own subtool, subdivide (Tool > Geometry>Subdivide) the creased low poly meshes into smoother, higher poly meshes, which should now have sharp lines wherever you applied creasing.

Good day @Spyndel

Thanks for the feedback.
Wanted to try it out yesterday, but the day kind off got away from me.
I hope to try out your advice this afternoon, will report back then.

Cheers!

Ahh great success!

Thanks @Spyndel crease was exactly what I was looking for, here are my results:

Capture

Great! You could also crease that additional line in the center of each mesh to retain that sharp edge visible there in the reference image.

Hi @Spyndel

Yeah I saw that would be possible, but I kinda like the rounded ‘spines’, so gonna keep them as is.
Now I just need to go watch some tuts on making this into a IMM
