Help Me Choose a Computer

Hello my name is Danny. I am a junior illustrator at Ringling College of Art and Design yet I focus on incorporating traditional maquette sculpture into a lot of my work. I have been playing with zbrush recently and have fallen in love with it. Now I realize I need a good computer to run it along with maya. The problem is I know very little about computers. I do think however, I would like to go the laptop route. I move around from studio to apartment to studio a lot and feel like it would be very good for me to be able to move my computer. However if this is an awful idea I am open for suggestions. I really just don’t know how to start looking for a good workhorse laptop or even desktop. Does anyone have any suggestions for a computer? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

i am on the same stage…i realized i need a computer…i believe it depends on how much you want to spent…i believe mac laptops are strong computers, but i don’t know if they are good for zbrush and maya.I noticed as i was searching on the forum that mac has some disadvantages than windows for z brush and maya…and for closing i think a desktop would be better:)…and a little detail…i prefer large screens for sculpting:)if you learn more i would like to know

I just went out and got a PC gaming desktop. They have the same specs that you need for working in 3D and they are easy to come across. In Australian dollars mine was $2700 one year ago of the shelf from a retail store and has:
16 GB ram
1 GB AMD graphics card
quad core 2.8 GHz processor
64 bit Operating system

I haven’t had any problems so far. And for a monitor I found that Dell has a good quality range for a reasonable price. The color is better than most.

Hope this helps. Dont stress too much about it, it will be outdated in 6 months anyway;)

From your talks it seems that you guys want cheap gaming computers…Why don’t you try to get a fully refurbished model… These are going to be cheaper in cost as well as will be under warranty and up to date with the latest software. With the money you save you would also be able to make additional upgrades to meet your specific configurations.
Take a look at IBM.com/shop.I have purchased 2-3 gaming computers from this site and the best part is I never had any problem…
