HELP creating VDMs

Hello, new to creating VDM’s and I’m having an issue.

Of course, i’m following the process here: http://docs.pixologic.com/user-guide/3d-modeling/sculpting/sculpting-brushes/vector-displacement-meshes/alpha3d-brushes/

No matter what I do, it just creates regular Alphas, not actual 3D Alphas (VDMs). I dont get the ‘3D’ on the Alpha display as i do with original Chisel brush.

At step 7, i select Chisel 3D, clone it (i’ve tried not cloning also), then proceed through the steps. When i finally hit ‘Brush -> Create MultiAlpha Brush’ it just makes a bunch of old-school 2D alphas.

HELP please! I’ve watched a bunch of YT vids and they all basically say same thing, but they get pretty 3D Alphas!

thanks in advance,

maybe you accidentaly moved the vdm plane away from the grid.

go to deformation>morph to grid.

another problem might be the mesh. have you done any scluptris pro sculpting on it?

mind sharing an image of what your mesh looks like?

Thanks pabgo, I found my problem, but figured i would post here for other’s who may make the same bone-head move.

Attached is my object i was trying to build VDM from:

I think you can see the issue; it is two objects i simply ‘merged’ together. I’m guessing maybe i could ‘dynamesh’ them to make it work? Instead i just started w/ square and hand sculpted the effect i wanted.
