help creating captain America's scales?

I’m doing the scales of his uniform. I’ve tried nanomesh, <got me close results but way to much over lapping>

I have seen people do sweaters and chain mail using zbrush. I think you have an obect and that replaces polygons with your chainmail shape? I’m really hoping someone can give me their thought on how to tackle these scales.

Been a huge pain in my side. appreciate any info on how to do this cleanly With out over lapping.

My next thought is to do a multi mesh of maybe 5 tiles, place them in patches and then alter with move tool aferwards? Looking for the best method.
Cheers

Have you looked at Scales in the Noise plugin-in the Surface palette?

I guess this could help you. Done with Nanomesh. The author also provides a nanobrush for different types of armor.
And he also made video.
