Help achieving smooth surface along off axis plane (sword edge)

Hey guys,

I’m working on a sword and got a decent edge on my blade using Trim Dynamic, looking at it from most angles its good, however, looking down the blade the surface is actually very uneven.

I’m able to get smooth surfaces on planar faces using Planar, but this is a curving face thats off axis.

Any advice to achieve the results im looking for would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I forgot about Hpolish, thought that might help smooth the blade edge but it did the opposite, causing elongated artifacts id expect from a mesh with poor topology. The topology looks uniform to me though. Still out of luck.

For a blade this simple i’d suggest building it with zmodeler rather than trying to hand carve your own geometry. It’s a bit of a learning curve if you haven’t used traditional polygonal modellers before but you’d be able to get your sword to this stage in minutes once you know what you’re doing.

If you really wanted to do it with other tools you could dynamesh the blade and subtract a flat edged insertmesh (like a cube) from it.

Thanks for the suggestion Tenabrae, thought I could get away without learning zmodeler. Guess I’ll just have to crash through and learn it. THanks.

it was painful enough to do basics with zmodeler without training that I resorted to maya, but I’d love to be able to do all of this low poly mesh work in zbrush. The video below looks great but shows nothing of how it was done.

check out the zmodeller tutorials on zclassroom, they’re some of the best zclassroom video and go through each zmodeller function individually.

You can do this without zmodeler…

Create a new polymesh3D

Initialize > Qsphere xres 4 yres 4 zres 4

Group and crease as shown

Transform x, y, z as required

With the move topological brush, move the points/topo to the shape you want

flatten z

tweak final shape, etc
