Hellboy Wip UPDATE 12.22.06

Hi. This is my work in progress for my intro to Zbrush class final project. The assignment was to sculpt a full figure, and I chose to do Mike Mignola’s Hellboy. I started with a painting I did a while back, and started referencing the movie as well as the comic to make it more realistic and meet the requirements of the class. I hope it isn’t a problem that the screen grabs are from Maya, I thought it would be better to show him with his place holder stone hand and eyes. We were taught to use Maya to look at the mesh in perspective, and I haven’t figured out how to do it in Zbrush. Right now he is at 5 subdivision levels @ around 252k polygons. Any comments and critiques are appreciated.

If there are any problems with the screen grabs, let me know and I’ll post ones from in Zbrush. There won’t be a stone hand or eyes though :frowning:

Looking good.
A vey nice take for sure.
A few suggestions at this point.
The Serratus looks off.
The tail at the base comes to abruptly to an end, very sharp.
Perhaps tapering the top off the tail into the sacrum.
Finally I don’t mind the over all proportions, I think the knees are weak though.
You might try adding some girth to them.
I think the over all forms will read better.
Or at least the transition between the Torso to the legs.
I think the legs will look like they can support all that mass.
Any how, those are the things that I noticed.
I really like it though!
Look forward to following this thread.:+1:

Looking forward to seeing where your going with this, first imprssion was simple he looks a little too top heavey, realy nice look-a-like of the big red guy thoug’. keep posting your updates.

PS. voodoomonkey whats a Serratus, you posted your reply as I was writing mine. it means nothing to me.

I LOVE the play on his proportions. I never read the Hellboy comics so I don’t know if this is how he was meant to be or artistic licesnce. Either way I think it’s awesome. Great work.

WENDEX2112, The Serratus group is the tooth shaped protrusions you see at on the side of the rib cage.
It’s where the External obliques and the Serratus meet to form that crossing pattern.
Looks very much like the teeth of a saw blade.
Hope that helps.

Wow, thanks for the quick comments and critiques:D

DHARMAESTUDIO: Thanks!! That’s exactly what I was going for:D

voodoomonkey: I’m writing all of that down (rather printing it, no internet connection at home) I ended around the seratus anterior area last night, and just kind of left it for my next session. I’ve been holding off on the tail because I wasn’t sure how to go about it. I’ll get to fixin those knees pronto. Thanks.

WENDEX2112:Thanks. I may trim down his torso (at least in the profile) once I get a better overall feel of the model.

j lizzle: It’s all Mignola’s doing. He’s one of my heroes.

hahahaha! the front view just doesnt look right with the tail!

Well, I guess you’ll see what you want to see.

Wow – looking wicked …I have always liked the top Heavy Version …….good job:+1:

Finally a verison that looks like Mike’s. congrats, it looks good so far.

Hey Chromosome,

AWESOME start! Cartoon-ish but at the same time detailed :+1:
You have to finish this guy
The muscles that goes from the clavicle up to the skull look a bif off -can’t remember how it’s called in english-

AWESOME model anyway :+1:

looks really cool, i like the style. Proportions are off, but they work. Keep up the good work

Here’s what I turned in for my final. I went over some anatomy issues (teres major/minor and tricep area among other things) but I’m going to keep working on it over the winter break. Hopefully I can put it on a reel and get an internship somewhere. Anywho, here’s a link to an image of the comic, so people can see how Mignola draws HB. More of gorilla proportions, sometimes more so than others.
