Head Doodle: Human-Rat

Hey guys, this is my first post on ZbrushCentral. I’ve been playing around with Zbrush for almost three months now, and this is the result of my frustration with another project I’m working on. I created a base human head in 3D Studio Max 8 and I’m using it to make some 3D Sketches of Heads. This head was made on a laptop with no mouse. My finger hurts so I figure it’s a good time to pause and check out what everyone else is up to. I’m not sure how far I want to take this head but it’s nice to have

Hahaha, cool start. Yes you need a tablet for your laptop, not a mouse. I’ve heard of self torture like yours before, next you’ll be claiming the laptop bit your leg off!

I like where this is going x-titan. I would also recommend a tablet. It will undoubtedly change the way you work.

Thanks for the comments guys. I use a mouse when I’m at home but when i’m at my girlfriend’s house I’m stuck using her laptop  it’s ok, except for the pain I get in my finger.

I’m planning on buying a tablet for Christmas… or whenever my patience runs out

What’s a good size for a tablet or a good tablet in general? I’m thinking of getting the 6x8 I’d rather get a nice one and spend a little more than struggle with a smaller cheaper one. Thanks for any help in advance.

get the smallest wacom size - I used to use a large wacom but realised unlike painting your not really drawing from the arm but the wrist.

It doesn’t look so impressive but it does the job.

So 4x5 or 6x8? I’m looking at the WACOM Intuos3. Is that the best brand? I dont know much and I dont want to waste time switching from one to another. Thanks for any help, I’m getting excited, I might get one real soon if I can figure out what I want/need.

I use a Wacom 4x5 and like it very much. I have used a 9x12 and found it way to large for doing smaller details, 6x8 may be the sweet spot though. I would also recommend the Intuos over the Grapphire range. The Intuos has 1024 lvls of sensitivity while the Grapphire has 512. So the intuos would be a better choice for those finer details in any program you are using it with. Hope that helps

UPDATE: I’m only going to tweak a few more things before I experiment with rendering him in 3D Studio Max. Let me know what you guys think

Sorry guys, I couldn’t resist. Here’s a quick Mentral Ray render. I just happen to like how it looks

Here’s a little update. It’s my first time actually trying to use hand painted Spec, Texture, Bump, and Photon map. It’s taken some tweaking to get it to this point, I mostly wanted to get a good base so I can work off of it. The lighting is going well too, I think. I also took off some time to figure out the Hair and Fur modefier but I still need to work more with it to understand it fully.

Here’s a little hair update, I’m using the trial version of Ornatrix for the hair. Max took way too long to render :frowning:

I rendered up the SSS Rat Man (Cornelious: The name is a WIP  ) and rendered out Spec and Hair out seperately. I composited them in Photoshop and added a drop shadow from the hair layer.

I wanted to do a quick test to see where I want to take the character. Still not sure what clothes or environment to place him in but I figure by the time I think of something I’ll have worked out the kinks  I’m having fun!

Sorry guys, I looked at it and when it loads the attachment, the white distracts from the image too much and makes it seem darker than it is. I added a bigger border so it’s easier to see.

I worked on the eyes all day today using Kris Costa’s tutorial on 3dTotal. I tweaked it a little bit to fit my needs but it’s an amazing process and tutorial.

I was wondering if I should add eyebrows. I do plan to add wiskers however. Again, this hair is just temporary.
